KENNETH ROBERT LAKE
July 3 1931 - January 23 2005
THE passing of Ken Lake leaves a void in the world of philately which
cannot be filled. His perception of the stamp world and his inimitable
style of writing graced these pages for four decades ... having developed
a boyhood interest in stamps, he entered the philatelic world professionally
in 1961 as a writer. Over the years he contributed well over 1000 articles
to many magazines in Britain, North America, Australia, South Africa, and
France, and had three books published ... in July 1967 he was appointed
advertisement manager at Stamp Collecting Weekly ... in December 1969 he
joined Stanley Gibbons Ltd ... he joined the London philatelists David
Field Ltd, where he eventually became managing director ... in July 1975
he set up the general stamp and postcard company Lake & Brooks Ltd
... always his ‘own man’, Ken reverted to full-time freelance
writing ... at the age of 61, in the autumn of 1992, he embarked on a 19-month
round-the-world odyssey ... He is survived by his younger sister, Margaret
Challenger, who lives in Canada, to whom we extend our sincerest condolences.
The full version of Ken Lake's obituary can be read in the March 2005
Philatelic Exporter.
