Michael Burzan - Europe

Soviet stamps booming
Russian stamps from the Soviet Union era have soared in value this year like no others - it may be called a modern 'gold rush'! The 'new money' from the east keeps flooding in. Even during the days of the worst of the financial crisis in October these items were being bought at surprisingly high prices ...

Get to the point!
I received a phone call in September from a gentleman asking me whether I had any 'Silk' cards. This is a question to which every dealer would be able to reply "yes". He then added "They must be woven silk." This narrowed down the request considerably as only a small minority of dealers would have a selection of woven silk cards in their stock. Knowledge is power!
I have not kept a record of how many times I have typed this mantra over the last three decades in my columns and on stamp bulletin boards, but it must be hundreds! However the message never dates. If you are just a few percentage points better informed than those around you, the cards always fall your way. Not everyone can know everything about stamps, not even stamps from their own country or area of specialisation ...

Current self-adhesives could deter collectors
Collectors of modern United States stamps face a new problem as a number of them will not soak free from the envelope. The US self-adhesive issues since 2007 have hit the jackpot in this department ...
