Promoting the hobby

I was delighted to hear that, despite earlier indications to the contrary, Royal Mail will be supporting London’s 2010 Festival of Stamps. It seems that in spite of recent severe financial constrictions within the organisation, those in charge of the purse strings seem to have realised just how important it is to the future of at least one element of their business that they support stamp collecting.

 

A long-awaited and welcome update

I recently received a welcome addition to my philatelic library. It is eight years since Stanley Gibbons published the tenth edition of its GB Specialised Volume 3 catalogue covering Elizabethan pre-decimal issues.

Until now, despite its age this well-thumbed tome has remained an indispensable reference work but, for obvious reasons, the pricing is no longer reliable and an update was well overdue.

Would you pay five times retail?

IF a customer phoned and asked for a nice copy of a fairly common stamp and you quoted five times your usual retail - would he pay it?

In my 25 years of full-time stamp dealing no-one has ever been quoted that much by me. I wouldn't dare, and the customer would never pay it anyway, so it is a ‘dead issue’! ...

A 'forever' stamp

I really don't understand the logic, but the USPS is planning a stamp that is good 'forever' no matter what the current rate is for first class mail. The current rate is 39c, but it looks like it will increase to 42c next year. There have been a number of complaints from postal customers about having to buy 2c and 3c stamps in order to use up their supplies of the previous issue every time there is a rate increase ...
