AROUND THE ROOMS
Extracts from auction previews and reviews:
David Feldman (+41 22 727 0777)
May 21-25: the series of spring auctions to be held in Geneva (and live
audio via the Internet), are exceptionally diverse. They consist of five
catalogues: the twice-yearly auction of Rarities of the World; the next
portion of the largest and most important collection of Greece Large
Hermes Heads ever formed; the Hassan Shaida Collection of Illustrated
Envelopes; award-winning Mexico classics together with Grand Prix Mail
of the Levant; and a thick catalogue of All-World Stamps, Covers, Collections
and Estates.
Grosvenor (020 7379 8789)
March 10-11: the first day presented the Apollonia collection of Bermuda
King George VI Large Key Type issues which attracted a very keen interest,
particularly in the scarcer varieties, from bidders attending from around
the world ... the next Grosvenor sale will be of GB on May 26.
Harmers of London (020 8747 6100)
April 5: nearly 1600 lots of stamps and postal history commencing with
the 'Michael and Sylvia Goaman' sale of Artists' Drawings with many attractive
lots selling for outstanding prices. Lot 54, GB 1961 Post Office Savings
Bank sketches, including a rough oversize sketch of a 1/3 value (the
design of the issued 1/6) selling for £3000 against an estimate
of £850.
This beautiful
essay for the 1966 Birds issue realised £1600 (est £750).
The Goaman Archive eventually went on to realise an impressive £70,000.
The total realisation of the auction was more than £525,000, an indication
of the increasing strength of the philatelic market. All prices mentioned
are hammer prices.
Warwick and Warwick (01926 499031)
June 8: the 'Rossi' collection of GB overprints, preceding the usual monthly
sale, will start at 10.00 hours.
