YOUR LETTERS
THE NON-LEVEL PLAYING FIELD
"AS PE readers all too well know by now, Post Office staff sell us labels instead of real stamps because they are easier to administer and also provide a receipt, or so they tell us.
But there is more. A rural sub-postmaster recently told me that he is actually paid more for handling mail franked with labels rather than real stamps. Not much - only a fraction of a penny per item - but, in his own words, "it all mounts up". Does this not prove - if more proof were needed - that staff are now officially and financially discouraged from selling postage stamps at all? ..."
W(H)ITHER STAMP FAIRS?
"MY brother Peter was over recently from Canada, where he acts as agent/courier for Bonhams. As usual he visited several fairs while in the UK. At Ealing on September 24 there were five dealers, and on the same afternoon, when we got to Purley, there were just three. The next day he went to Ascot, where there were four dealers, two of whom had been at Purley the day before ..."
POSTCODES REDUNDANT?
"I recently had cause to complain to Royal Mail about two misdelivered items on the same day involving three addresses which have only the street name and house number in common. If this is a new process, it'll create havoc for deliveries ..."
